Beauty industry trailblazer Sharon Chuter has passed away at the age of 38. She was found deceased on a patio on August 14, 2025, and the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner has listed her cause of death as “deferred,” pending further investigation.
Chuter was an influential force in beauty and social advocacy. Before founding Uoma Beauty in 2019, she leveraged her experience with major beauty brands like L’Oréal and LVMH, and even convinced Revlon to distribute products in her native Nigeria. Uoma quickly became celebrated for its industry-leading inclusivity, launching with an impressive 51 foundation shades and a mission rooted in representation.
Beyond beauty, Chuter was best known for her civil rights initiates:
- In 2020, she launched the Pull Up for Change and #PullUpOrShutUp campaigns, urging beauty companies to reveal workforce diversity.
- In 2021, she introduced Make It BLACK, advocating for more inclusive definitions of “Black” in dictionaries and launching branded campaigns whose proceeds supported Black-owned businesses and emerging founders.
Even after stepping down as CEO in 2023 during a health-related leave (though she remained a shareholder), Chuter continued her advocacy—from filing a February 2025 lawsuit alleging wrongful removal from her brand’s operations to pushing forward critical conversations about equity in beauty.
