Sentenced to Home Monitoring, Community Service
Shawn Kemp, the former Seattle SuperSonics All-Star, has been sentenced to 30 days of electronic home monitoring, along with 240 hours of community service and one year of supervised release, after pleading guilty to second-degree assault related to a 2023 parking lot shooting near Tacoma Mall.
Despite prosecutors seeking a harsher nine-month jail term, Judge Michael Schwartz deemed the circumstances—particularly Kemp’s claim of self-defense—warranted a less severe approach.
What Happened
The incident stemmed from a March 2023 confrontation. Kemp tracked two thieves to the location after they broke into his truck and stole items including his phone and sports memorabilia. He alleges one of them fired at him, prompting him to return fire—no one was hurt in the exchange.
Kemp’s Reflections & Future Plans
After the sentencing, Kemp expressed regret over how he handled the situation, saying, “I should have used better discretion.” He emphasized his desire to use this experience as a platform to combat gun violence and inspire young people not to “think twice” when acting under emotion.
