A 17-year-old suspect wounded three people in Times Square early Saturday. Quick police response and the city’s ongoing drop in shootings underscore a shift in public safety trends.
In the early hours of Saturday, a shooting occurred in New York City’s Times Square, injuring three bystanders following a verbal altercation. An 18-year-old woman was grazed in the neck, a 19-year-old man was shot in the foot, and a 65-year-old man was hit in the leg. All victims are in stable condition. A 17-year-old suspect was taken into custody, and the firearm recovered.
Despite this alarming event, city leaders point to a broader safety trend—shootings are at record lows, a 23% drop from the same period last year. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch remarked that New York is “resetting the curve” in terms of public safety.
