Bronx rapper Ice Spice is shutting down claims that she’s not a lyricist— and she says she’s known her worth all along.
In an interview with NYLON, Ice Spice addressed criticism that her music lacks lyrical depth. She admitted that early in her career she didn’t always respond to those attacks, but now feels confident enough to claim her space and defend her pen game.
“People were trying to say that I’m not a lyricist, and I just kind of went in with the attitude of ‘Yeah, they’re right. I’m not.’ But it’s just not true.”
She continued, emphasizing that writing lyrics has always mattered to her, even if she didn’t fight for her recognition before.
Ice Spice also credited fellow artists like Taylor Swift for helping her keep her focus and confidence. She said advice from Swift inspired her in moments of self-doubt and helped her stay grounded as she dealt with criticism.
