A Milestone in Hip-Hop Radio
Legendary DJ Funkmaster Flex — radio icon and gatekeeper of hip-hop culture — announced that this Monday, Labor Day, September 1, 2025, at 7 p.m., will mark his final radio show on Hot 97 . The Bronx-born DJ, born Aston George Taylor Jr., has been synonymous with the station since launching its first hip-hop program in 1992 . Officially, he wrote on social media:
“THIS MONDAY LABOR DAY SEPTEMBER 1ST WILL BE MY LAST SHOW ON HOT97 AT 7PM! ALL THINGS COME TO AN END! END OF AN ERA THAT I ENJOYED VERY MUCH!”
Reflecting on a Legendary Career
Over the past three decades, Funkmaster Flex gifted hip-hop fans with live freestyle sessions, artist interviews, and his signature “bomb” sound effects. In August, he was honored with the Key to the City of New York, recognizing his immense cultural impact as a champion for emerging artists and a pioneer on the airwaves .
While Flex has not confirmed if this move signals full retirement, listeners are already mourning the end of one of hip-hop’s most enduring radio presences
