BMW is preparing a serious challenger to the iconic Mercedes-Benz G-Class. Internally codenamed the G74, this rugged luxury SUV is expected to hit production in the second half of 2029 at the company’s South Carolina plant—marking a strategic shift toward adventurous, all-terrain capability.
Based on a heavily modified version of the upcoming X5 platform, the G74 is anticipated to serve as a halo model, replacing the performance-focused XM in BMW’s lineup. Unlike the XM’s hyper-luxury street orientation, the G74 will feature off-road enhancements such as a boxy silhouette, reinforced underbody protection, enhanced suspension, and specially tuned drive modes.
BMW’s recent xOffroad package for the X5—adding all-terrain tires, a locking rear differential, and underbody protection—gives a preview of G74’s enhanced capabilities. This move also addresses Mercedes’ success with body-on-frame ruggedness while delivering BMW’s signature refinement.
Why This Matters
- New Terrain for BMW: Finally enters the hardcore off-road luxury segment.
- Disruptor Potential: A convincing alternative for G-Class loyalists—especially if paired with hybrid or IC engine options.
- Halo Vehicle Evolution: Signals a shift in BMW’s brand identity—from track-focused to trail-capable.
